We’re living in a time where autoimmune and chronic health conditions are more common than ever. The question many have is how to cure my “lifelong” skin condition. The truth is, it doesn’t have to be lifelong if you follow the right steps. Doctors usually just prescribe a steroid cream, which is terrible for you. Not many talk about diet when tackling autoimmune conditions.

This is exactly what I would do

I would Avoid

  1. Ultra-processed foods – sweets, cakes, biscuits, chips, protein snacks, shop breads, ready-to-eat foods, frozen ready meals, soda, bottled sauces, fried foods, etc.
  2. Seed oils – avoid anything that contains rapeseed, sunflower or palm oil and do not use them for cooking.
  3. Processed sugar and starches – don’t consume any sugars and look out for hidden sugars such as maltodextrin, dextrose, glucose, corn starch, rice starch, etc.
  4. Nightshade vegetables – many people with eczema react badly to Potatoes, Tomatoes, Aubergines (eggplants), Tomatillos, Bell peppers, Chilli peppers, including jalapeños, habaneros and serranos, Pimento.
  5. Grains – grains can also trigger eczema in some people. Try to avoid consuming rice, oats, pasta, bread, and wheat. I would cut them out or limit them for now and try to add them on later to see how I react.
  6. Avoid foods containing Salicylates – Pepper, coffee, radish, wine, beer, cinnamon, ginger, etc.

I would try to find out my triggers and see what I react badly to.. You might tolerate some foods fine, but you need to experiment with nightshades, grains and dairy. These are usually the most common triggers.

What I would consume

  1. Cook with real Butter (not margarine), ghee, olive oil, avocado oil, and beef tallow.
  2. Beef, lamb, sardines, eggs, chicken( eat fattier cuts like thighs and drumsticks with skin on)
  3. Healthy fats like avocados and olive oil. Don’t buy low-fat.
  4. Organ meats, bone marrow, liver.
  5. Cruciferous vegetables and berries.
  6. Green tea, coffee, black tea.

Daily Habits

  1. Eat only when hungry.
  2. Don’t eat till full as recommended in the Sunnah. Eat till satisfied.
  3. Read ingredient labels; if you can’t recognise the ingredients or pronounce them, DO NOT eat them. Make sure it has no seed oils, sugars or starch.
  4. Don’t snack; try to eat only 1-2 meals a day.
  5. Cook your own meals using single whole ingredient foods.

Daily Supplementation

  1. Vitamin D3 + K2, two tablets in the morning ( will give you 8000 units of Vitamin D3). Purchase here . Vitamin D is directly related to skin health.
  2. Magnesium Glycinate, 2 capsules at night. Here. This helps you absorb more Vitamin D and also promotes better sleep.
  3. 1 tsp Black seed oil daily.
  4. Unflavored Kefir (ensure the ingredients are clean), drink 100g-250g a day. Can be taken on an empty stomach or with a meal. European shops usually have good quality kefir for cheap. Kefir is so potent for the gut. A lot of our health starts in the gut!
  5. Pinch of sea salt/Himalayan salt in water during IF
  6. Cod Liver Oil, it’s high in Vitamin A, D and Omega 3, which all promote healthy skin.
  7. Zinc, it’s important to take it with copper as well. They can be taken in equal doses.
  8. 1 tsp Raw Organic Honey in water. This is great for your gut.
  9. Take a black currant seed oil supplement or a few drops with water orally.

To Soothe Dry Skin and improve texture

  1. Take five drops of black currant seed oil and rub it in your hands to warm it up. Then apply it to the affected area.
  2. Mix 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in 8 ounces of water and apply to your skin.
  3. Use an unscented natural tallow balm like ours or any tallow balm from a reputable company. I would avoid anything with chemicals, as they can irritate.
